What is a Poetry Painting?
A Poetry Painting is the term Geffert began calling her paintings that combined her own poems. The concept for the poetry painting came to her after she wrote the poem, "Key to My Soul" ©2010. This poem became her first Poetry Painting because at the time the key necklaces were popular and she wrote the poem based on their popularity and the idea of finding someone who had the key to her soul attracted her. She thought but what if the person has the key and they don't realize it. She felt that the painting captured her poem in a way she never imagined and followed up Key to My Soul later with the poetry painting, "Chlorine" ©2010. Chlorine was based on her real life allergy to chlorine that she had since childhood but had never prevented her from going in swimming pools until the summer of 2010 when she also decided to give up men who kept dissolving her heart as the chlorine dissolved her skin. She says that painting Chlorine was one of the most therapeutic experiences of her life. She took everything she was feeling out on the canvas. When she stepped away from the painting she realized that her poem would now speak to people more than it ever could locked in a journal. She had found a way to give her poems a voice and to make them more tangible to her viewers.
