ARTIST STATEMENT:
A blank canvas stares up at me in the same way that a blank notebook always did; just waiting to be filled with ideas, creativity, and imagination.  The pen and paintbrush I hold very dear, they are my defense against the world so that nothing is ever left unsaid. Every poetry painting is poured with passion, exuding every emotion entitled art.
What is Folksy Art?

"
Folksy Art is simple, informal & unpretentious art that can only be created through the untrained eye but is respected for its definitive character, style, wisdom, & charm."-Stephanie Geffert (Artist, Folksy Art)

Who is Folksy Art?

Stephanie Geffert (Poetry Artist/Owner Folksy Art)
is a poet, writer, and poetry artist and a librarian. Her style is contemporary and folksy. Geffert has been a writer and a lover of poetry since the third grade but has only been painting since 2008. She was unaware she had a talent for painting but says that one day it was like she received a
gift. She has been celebrating the gift ever since. Painting can now take her words beyond the notebook in what she calls Poetry Paintings (see below for a definition).

Geffert's artwork has been displayed at the Newark Arts Alliance, 2011 Wilmington Fringe Festival, Wilmington Art Loop 2011 and 2012, Faces First Day Spa, Starbucks, Bellefonte Arts, North Wilmington Library, and Zaikka Indian Grill.

She now donates some of the proceeds from the sale of her artwork to causes that help survivors of domestic violence and child sexual abuse through her project, Stevana Arts.

She currently offers custom/personalized poetry paintings by commission.

When she is not busy painting for Folksy Art she enjoys spending time with her daughter the most and staying physically active.  She loves to browse antique shops, visit the beach and has fun caring for her pet bunnies (Snowball, Valentine, Tiny Tim, Cottontail, and Koala)!

What is a Poetry Painting?

A Poetry Painting is the term Geffert began calling her paintings that combined her own poems.  The concept for the poetry painting came to her after she wrote the poem, "Key to My Soul" ©2010. This poem became her first Poetry Painting because at the time the key necklaces were popular and she wrote the poem based on their popularity and the idea of finding someone who had the key to her soul attracted her. She thought but what if the person has the key and they don't realize it. She felt that the painting captured her poem in a way she never imagined and followed up Key to My Soul later with the poetry painting, "Chlorine" ©2010. Chlorine was based on her real life allergy to chlorine that she  had since childhood but had never prevented her from going in swimming pools until the summer of 2010 when she also decided to give up men who kept dissolving her heart as the chlorine dissolved her skin. She says that painting Chlorine was one of the most therapeutic experiences of her life. She took everything she was feeling out on the canvas. When she stepped away from the painting she realized that her poem would now speak to people more than it ever could locked in a journal. She had found a way to give her poems a voice and to make them more tangible to her viewers.

To commission Geffert to create your very own poetry painting contact her at folksyart@gmail.com before your next special occassion or event. She is also available for public speaking engagements
